After many months a fresh release of the rather good Minigalaxy is out. It's a free and open source client for GOG, helping you manage your game library from the DRM-free store. Yet again, the community building what a company won't for Linux, since GOG still have no clear plan for Galaxy on Linux officially.

Minigalaxy version 1.1 is the biggest yet, including numerous needed enhancements to make it go from good to great.

Just some of the new features includes:

  • Improve integrity check after downloading.
  • Show an error showing Windows games cannot be enabled.
  • Add properties menu for games where game specific actions can be made like setting launch options and opening the store page.
  • Add a disk space check before downloading.
  • Use a different colour for the play button for installed games.
  • Put installed games at the top of the list.
  • Remember if the user had the installed filter enabled.
  • Add option to hide games.
  • Add a dark theme.
  • It also adds translations for Czech, Finnish, Italian, Swedish and Ukrainian.

Nice to see it continue to improve and those are some wonderful improvements. Minigalaxy certainly does the job, and it's my go-to if I'm going to grab anything from GOG rather than messing with direct-downloads.

Check it out on GitHub.

Is it only for games that are native (or as the case may be has the appropriate dosbox emulation installers)? Would be aweosome to integrate Proton into it. Which I think is the one downside I have found with Lutris. I should try it out and see which I like more.

I like this title because it doesn't assume the reader-base is already familiar with this tool.

Which is smart considering Steam Deck is nearly here and there will be lots of new people looking for tools like this.

So... Is this tool Lutris alike, downloading for Me everything I need for to run a GOG Windows game on Linux?

In my understanding yes. I have not tested MiniGalaxy in a long while though. It is coming together with all vitals needed as we can see.

The Wine support in minigalaxy is not as good as Lutris, but it will install the game. You will have an easier time getting a Windows game running in Lutris unless it's a game that can be run with no Wine tweaking at all. I have only tested Frost Punk so far, and so have been sticking to only Linux games in minigalaxy.

Since I wasn't happy with the GOG connection of Lutris, what I ended up doing was installing Frost Punk via minigalaxy and then adding that game to Lutris and launching from Lutris. That works.

What would be nice is some more auto-config stuff for the included DOSBox games on GOG. As it is, I need to change the config for MIDI output every time.
